Embracing Confusion: Unlocking the Wisdom in Uncertainty

Embrace uncertainty!

How many times have you heard this declaration? A Google search on the term yielded 73.3 million hits. Woah!

Embracing uncertainty seems prudent during times of volatility. But doing so requires embracing confusion, the first experience we confront when becoming open to the unknown.

In my years as a coach, teacher, guide, and consultant, I’ve found “confusion” to be the important threshold in determining how people learn and grow.

Thus, the experience of confusion deserves attention. How we relate to confusion determines how we learn, grow, and evolve—and our ability to embrace uncertainty.

COVID-19 Reveals the Nature of Uncertainty

Uncertainty causes panic.

This seems to be the mantra right now. It makes sense and also reveals a hidden truth: that we expect certainty. Without it, panic arises.

A challenging truth to absorb is that the very certainty we expect, or need may also be a source of our suffering. The issue here is not certainty itself, but the need for certainty. And, the unexamined need for certainty can produce anxiety, which results in an obsessive pull to make the right choice rather than the next choice.

Our attachment to needs—growing to expect them—can find us lost in their absence.

Rather than continuing to fill these needs, how might we dissolve them? What would evolving beyond them make possible?
