Beyond Coaching: Apollo, Dionysus, and the Art of Being of Service

Life unfolds through creative tension.

The ancient Greeks captured this tension through two mythic figures: Apollo and Dionysus, both sons of Zeus (though born of different mothers: Leto and Semele, respectively).

Popularized by Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy, the Apollonian–Dionysian duality captures the enduring tension between order and emergence, reason and instinct, structure and vitality.

Through Apollo, we seek harmony, clarity, understanding, and distinct form. He helps us distinguish, discern, organize, and make sense of experiences.

Unlocking the Wisdom of Co-Creating in Coaching

In the coaching field, “co-creating” refers to the collaborative process between the coach and client, in which both parties actively participate in shaping the coaching relationship, discovering ideas, setting goals, and designing strategies for growth and development.

Often, I hear co-creation described inside a binary paradigm. The coach follows or guides the client, or the client knows what’s best to guide the coach. Or the coach offers soothing nods and remains quiet and reserved while waiting for the client to guide them.
